Reverend Richard Buckley 2020

Tony Young and Derek Shepherd 2019

Most of the first generation tramway systems in the South Lancashire area have been the subject of tramway histories with the exception of Bolton. A considerable amount of material has been gathered over the years, notably by the late Alan Ralphs who sadly died before he was able to put it into publishable form. The mantle has been taken up by Tony Young and Derek Shepherd, the former being persuaded by the latter that much of the research had been done by Alan.

Derek is an acknowledged authority on Bolton trams having driven them in his youth and restored Bolton 66 which now runs in Blackpool. Tony is an experienced transport historian and author. This is his third tramway history book - the first was ‘Tramways in Rochdale, Steam, Electric and Metrolink’ published by the LRTA in 2008 and the second ‘Tramways in Bury’ published by the LRTA in 2017. Tony admits that he could not have written this book without Derek’s enthusiastic knowledge and expertise.

The result is a detailed and comprehensive history of Bolton’s tramways, which closed over seventy years ago in March 1947.

restoration at the National Tramway Museum, including its return to operation. Featuring a wealth of rarely seen photographs and documents, the book provides an in-depth account of
the restoration of one of the most significant tramcars ever built. The book explains not only how the Museum decides whether or not to restore a tramcar within its collection, but
also the process that leads up to the physical restoration taking place. Supported by images taken throughout the duration of the project, the reader is taken through every major
element of the restoration of LCC No. 1 to 1932 operational condition.

This book is intended to give an impression of the diversity of Japanese trams. However, it is not a pure illustrated book, nor is it limited to route maps and vehicle lists. These
are of course included and make up a large part of the content, but the authors would like to give a comprehensive impression of the companies and their operations in this fascinating
country. Therefore, in addition to images, fleet lists and track maps of all tramways, it also contains other useful information, such as descriptions of the operations and the use of
vehicles, tips on photo locations and special features along the routes. It is supplemented by chapters on the museums, the tram systems that were closed after 1945 and the trolleybus
companies. It was decided to present the systems in geographical order from north to south, according to the four main islands of Japan on which they operate. English and German

The far south-west of England possessed four 3ft 6in gauge electric tramways serving Camborne and Redruth, Plymouth, Torquay and Exeter. Each of these had a different character. The Camborne & Redruth saw significant freight traffic, which persisted after passenger services ceased. Plymouth was served by three different operators at one stage before the corporation took over. Torquay made use of the unusual Dolter stud system whilst in Exeter the trams had to make their way through the narrow mediaeval streets.

The first volume in the ‘Lost Tramways of Ireland’ series features the history of the Belfast system, including its origins as a horse tramway in the 1870s, its conversion to electric traction in the early 20th century, its role in two World Wars, the conversion of the network to bus and trolleybus operation from the late 1940s and the system’s eventual demise in 1954. Amongst the locations featured are Glengormley, Greencastle and Bloomfield as well as York Road and Queen’s Quay railway stations.

The book narrates the story of the city’s impressive network from its origins as a horse tramway in the 1870s, through the early years of electrification and expansion during the first decades of the 20th century through to World War II. The book also focuses on locations in the southern half of the city, including South of the Clyde, Glenfield, Mosspark, Burnside, Admiral Street and more.

Peter Waller’s first book, British and Irish Tramway Systems since 1945, was published in 1992 and since then he has written extensively on transport subjects. He is now a full-time author and editor as well as being a director and secretary of the Online Transport Archive.
