Description

This hard-back book is about a Wood Green trolleybus depot crew – driver Bill Ryder and conductor Jim Feirghley, who allowed a sixteen-year-old schoolboy into their working environment for eight months in 1961.  It is presented in a unique way in that the animated text is in date order and the photographs, in the main, are in geographical order.  Bill and Jim worked on routes 625, 627, 629 and 641 with each being liberally illustrated from end to end.  Other trolleybus routes and some motorbus routes they encountered also feature.  The change of class from H1 to K1/K2 is demonstrated and the fact that Wood Green was involved in three conversion stages adds to the dialogue and the number of images used – 361 monochromes with eight pages of colour.  Also illustrated are farecharts, badges, traffic circulars and the like.

Bill and Jim saw replacement buses in their working arena as early as the summer of 1959, coming into contact with more in 1960 and 1961 as the trolleybus conversion progressed; there are photos of brand-new replacement buses which have never been seen before.  The last day of stage ten is liberally illustrated as is the final day – Tuesday 7th November 1961.  The compiler encouraged Bill Ryder to join him on the final run – on trolleybus 1353 to Winchmore Hill on route 641; there were just forty-five minutes to go before stage twelve came to a conclusion but an event occurred two minutes after Bill boarded.  He was the only London Transport employee who knew what to do and it was his trolleybusmanship that enabled this conversion to finish as it should; one of the views of the situation, in the compiler’s view, is the photograph of the whole conversion.  All forty-four trolleybuses that operated out of Wood Green depot between stages ten and twelve are shown and, by chance, twenty-one of those forwarded to Isleworth are also seen; most gained another year’s service in West London and there are images of them working there.  This book should appeal to both the transport historian and to others outside of this field.

Tony Young and Derek Shepherd 2019

Most of the first generation tramway systems in the South Lancashire area have been the subject of tramway histories with the exception of Bolton. A considerable amount of material has been gathered over the years, notably by the late Alan Ralphs who sadly died before he was able to put it into publishable form. The mantle has been taken up by Tony Young and Derek Shepherd, the former being persuaded by the latter that much of the research had been done by Alan.

Derek is an acknowledged authority on Bolton trams having driven them in his youth and restored Bolton 66 which now runs in Blackpool. Tony is an experienced transport historian and author. This is his third tramway history book - the first was ‘Tramways in Rochdale, Steam, Electric and Metrolink’ published by the LRTA in 2008 and the second ‘Tramways in Bury’ published by the LRTA in 2017. Tony admits that he could not have written this book without Derek’s enthusiastic knowledge and expertise.

The result is a detailed and comprehensive history of Bolton’s tramways, which closed over seventy years ago in March 1947.

This book tells the story of LCC No. 1 from its inception in 1929, detailing its construction, its service in London and Leeds, its time spent in preservation and its recent
restoration at the National Tramway Museum, including its return to operation. Featuring a wealth of rarely seen photographs and documents, the book provides an in-depth account of
the restoration of one of the most significant tramcars ever built. The book explains not only how the Museum decides whether or not to restore a tramcar within its collection, but
also the process that leads up to the physical restoration taking place. Supported by images taken throughout the duration of the project, the reader is taken through every major
element of the restoration of LCC No. 1 to 1932 operational condition.

by Peter Sohns & Alexander Weber LRTA 2023

This book is intended to give an impression of the diversity of Japanese trams. However, it is not a pure illustrated book, nor is it limited to route maps and vehicle lists. These
are of course included and make up a large part of the content, but the authors would like to give a comprehensive impression of the companies and their operations in this fascinating
country. Therefore, in addition to images, fleet lists and track maps of all tramways, it also contains other useful information, such as descriptions of the operations and the use of
vehicles, tips on photo locations and special features along the routes. It is supplemented by chapters on the museums, the tram systems that were closed after 1945 and the trolleybus
companies. It was decided to present the systems in geographical order from north to south, according to the four main islands of Japan on which they operate. English and German
text.

A4 softback; 272 pages, 423 colour and black & white pictures, 48 track maps.

The far south-west of England possessed four 3ft 6in gauge electric tramways serving Camborne and Redruth, Plymouth, Torquay and Exeter. Each of these had a different character. The Camborne & Redruth saw significant freight traffic, which persisted after passenger services ceased. Plymouth was served by three different operators at one stage before the corporation took over. Torquay made use of the unusual Dolter stud system whilst in Exeter the trams had to make their way through the narrow mediaeval streets.
